A torsion spring is not a generic part. It is calculated for a specific door, and a spring that is close but not right will work — for a while — and then fail early while making everything else on the door work harder.

The four numbers

Wire size. The diameter of the wire the spring is wound from. Small differences here make large differences in the spring's rating.

Inside diameter. Must match the torsion tube and the cones.

Length. Determines, together with wire size and ID, how much lift the spring provides.

Wind direction. Left-hand and right-hand wound. On a two-spring setup they are a matched opposite pair, and fitting two of the same is a genuine hazard.

Those four together determine the spring's IPPT — inch pounds per turn — and therefore whether it balances your specific door.

Why balance matters so much

A properly sprung door is counterbalanced: the springs carry essentially the whole weight, and the opener only has to overcome friction and inertia. Disconnect the opener, lift the door to waist height, and it should stay there.

When springs are undersized or worn:

  • The opener carries weight it was never designed to lift, and it fails early.
  • Cables and drums see higher loads.
  • The door is genuinely dangerous to operate manually.
  • Everything wears faster.

Oversized springs are also a problem — the door flies up, slams at the top, and is hard to hold down manually.

Cycle life

Standard residential springs are commonly rated around 10,000 cycles, which for a typical household is roughly seven to ten years. High-cycle springs rated to 20,000 or more cost modestly more and are worth it on a door that gets heavy use — a shop, a rental, or a household where the garage is the main entrance.
