Garage Door Safety Around Kids and Pets
The reversal systems on a garage door only work if they're tested. Here's what to check, how often, and the habits that prevent accidents.

A garage door is the heaviest moving thing in a typical house, and it moves in a space where children and pets are frequently underfoot. The safety systems built into modern openers work well — when they're functional and correctly set, which is not something to assume.
The two independent safety systems
Modern openers have two separate protections, and both need to work.
Photo-eye sensors. A pair of sensors near the floor on either side of the opening, projecting an invisible beam across the doorway. Break the beam while the door is closing and it reverses immediately. These have been required on residential openers manufactured since the early 1990s.
Contact reversal. The opener senses resistance while closing and reverses. This is governed by the force setting.
They protect against different scenarios. The photo eye catches something in the doorway before contact. Contact reversal catches something the beam missed — an object below the beam height, or a pet that darted under after the beam cleared.
Testing them, monthly
Photo-eye test: Start the door closing, then wave an object through the beam near the floor — a broom handle works. The door should reverse immediately and fully.
Contact test: Lay a solid object flat on the floor in the door's path. A 2x4 laid flat is the standard. Close the door onto it. The door must contact the object and reverse.
If either test fails, stop using the opener until it's fixed. That's not caution, it's the correct response — a door that won't reverse is genuinely dangerous.
Sensor placement matters
The sensors should be mounted low — around six inches off the floor is the standard, which is deliberately low enough to catch a small child lying in the doorway.
Sensors that have been mounted higher, either originally or after someone got tired of them tripping, defeat the purpose. If yours are up at knee height, they should come down.
Also check that they're aimed at each other and their lenses are clean. Dust, cobwebs and a knock from a bike are the usual causes of a door that reverses randomly, and the temptation is to work around it rather than fix it.
Openers old enough to lack sensors
If your opener predates the photo-eye requirement, it should be replaced. Not adjusted, not worked around — replaced. Contact reversal alone was not adequate, which is exactly why the standard changed.
You can identify these easily: no sensors near the floor, and often a single button wall control with no safety indicators.
The habits that matter more than the equipment
Nobody plays with the wall control. The wall button should be mounted high enough that small children can't reach it, at least five feet off the floor, and where the person pressing it can see the whole door.
Remotes don't live where kids can get them. Not in an unlocked car in the driveway, not on a hall table.
Watch the door all the way down. The habit of pressing the button and walking away is where most incidents happen. Stay until it's fully closed.
Nobody walks under a moving door. This includes adults, and adults are the worst offenders.
Nobody rides the door. Every generation of kids discovers this and it's exactly as dangerous as it looks.
Keep pets inside while the door operates. A dog moving under a closing door is fast and the sensors may not be positioned to catch them.
The emergency release
Know where the red release cord is and how it works — pulling it disconnects the door from the opener so it can be moved by hand. Everyone in the household should know this.
Two things worth understanding: pull it with the door closed rather than open, because releasing an open door with weak springs lets it fall. And know how to re-engage it, which on most openers means running the opener until the trolley reconnects.
The springs are a separate hazard
Torsion and extension springs store enormous energy. Nobody should be adjusting, tightening or removing anything on the spring assembly or the bottom brackets. Extension springs specifically should have containment cables running through them so a break doesn't send the spring across the garage.
If your extension springs don't have containment cables, that's a cheap fix worth doing now.
Get it checked
We test both reversal systems, sensor placement and height, force settings, balance and spring condition as part of every tune-up. If your door hasn't been checked in a while and there are kids in the house, that's the visit to book.
