Why springs break on cold mornings

Almost every winter we take a run of Smyth County calls on the first genuinely cold morning of the season, and the story is always the same: the door worked perfectly yesterday.

Cold did not break the spring. A torsion spring has a finite cycle life — a typical residential spring is rated for around 10,000 open-and-close cycles, which for an average household is somewhere around seven to ten years. When it reaches the end of that life it fails, and cold weather is simply the moment that tips it: steel contracts slightly, lubricant thickens, and the load goes up marginally.

The warnings a door gives first

A spring at the end of its life usually tells you before it goes:

• The door feels heavier if you disconnect the opener and lift it by hand.
• It moves unevenly, or seems to jerk part-way through travel.
• New noises — a groan or a bang on opening.
• The opener works harder, straining or running slower than it used to.
• Visible gaps in the coil, or rust and pitting on the spring itself.

If your door is doing any of that in November, deal with it before December.

The balance test

Disconnect the opener with the release cord and lift the door by hand to about waist height. A properly balanced door stays roughly where you put it. If it slams down or shoots up, the springs are out of balance and the opener has been compensating — which shortens the opener's life too.
