Garage Door Repair in Bristol, VA

What we see most in Bristol

A lot of the housing on the Virginia side dates from the mid-century, and a good share of those garages still run extension springs with their original cables and pulleys. That system works reliably right up until a cable frays through — and then the door comes down hard, usually with no warning.

The things worth checking on an older extension setup:

• Fraying at the cable, particularly where it wraps the pulley. Individual strands standing proud of the cable is the warning.
• One spring visibly longer than its pair. Springs stretch as they fatigue, and an uneven pair means one is doing more work than it should.
• Rust at the drums and pulleys, which is where a cable eventually catches and wears through.
• Missing safety cables running through the extension springs. If a spring breaks without one, it becomes a projectile. This is not optional hardware.

Newer construction out toward Exit 7

The subdivisions on the eastern side of town are mostly sectional doors with torsion springs, and the calls there are different — openers, safety sensors knocked out of alignment, and worn rollers rather than structural failures. Those are quick fixes when somebody actually turns up.

Converting extension to torsion

On an older Bristol home with an extension setup that is at the end of its life, converting to torsion is frequently worth doing rather than replacing like for like. A torsion system is better balanced, safer when something fails, and generally lasts longer. It needs adequate headroom above the door, which we check on site.
