Limit and Force Settings: The Adjustments Behind Most Opener Complaints
A door that stops short, reverses for no reason or pounds the floor is usually a settings problem, not a broken part.

A surprising share of opener calls turn out to be adjustment rather than repair. Two settings control most of it, and understanding what they do explains a lot of the odd behavior people describe.
Travel limits
Limits tell the opener where the door's fully open and fully closed positions are. The opener counts travel and stops at those points.
When they're wrong:
- Close limit set too far — the door reaches the floor and the opener keeps driving, so it pounds into the concrete, the chain or belt jumps, and the door may bounce back open because the opener senses resistance.
- Close limit set too short — the door stops with a gap at the bottom. Cold air, water and pests come in, and the door isn't secure.
- Open limit too far — the door drives into the stop at the end of the track, which is loud and hard on the hardware.
- Open limit too short — the door doesn't fully open, and the bottom edge hangs into the opening where you can hit it with a vehicle.
Limits drift over time as the chain or belt stretches slightly and hardware settles, which is why a door that has been fine for years can start stopping short.
Force settings
Force is how much resistance the opener will push against before it decides something is in the way and stops or reverses. This is a safety setting, not a convenience one.
When it's wrong:
- Set too low — the door reverses partway for no apparent reason, or won't close on a cold morning when everything moves a little stiffer. This is a common East Tennessee winter complaint.
- Set too high — the opener will drive the door into an obstruction rather than reversing. That defeats the entire contact-reversal safety system, and it's how doors damage vehicles and hurt people.
Cranking the force up to make a stubborn door close is the single most dangerous adjustment a homeowner makes, and it's extremely common. If a door needs more force than it used to, something mechanical has changed and force is masking it.
What force is usually masking
A door that suddenly needs more force to close or open is telling you about a mechanical problem:
- Springs losing tension, so the opener is carrying weight it shouldn't
- Worn or seized rollers binding in the track
- Track misalignment creating a tight spot
- A bent track or a dented section
- Dry hinges and bearings adding drag
- A door out of square after a settling foundation or a bump
Fix the mechanical cause and the door closes on normal force settings again.
The tests that verify the settings
Contact reversal test. Lay a solid object flat on the floor in the door's path — a 2x4 on its side is the standard. Close the door onto it. The door must contact it and reverse. If it presses down and keeps pressing, the close force is too high.
Photo-eye test. With the door closing, break the beam between the sensors near the floor. The door must reverse immediately. This is a separate system from force and both must work.
Balance test. Disconnect the opener and lift by hand. A properly balanced door lifts with moderate effort and stays where you leave it. If it fights you, the springs need attention and no amount of opener adjustment fixes that.
Run all three at least annually.
Where the adjustments are
Older openers use adjustment screws on the motor housing. Newer ones use buttons and a programming sequence, and many learn the travel automatically when you run a setup routine.
Because it varies so much by make and model, the manual matters here. And because force is a safety setting, if you're not confident about what you're changing, it's worth having someone who does this daily set it and verify with the reversal tests.
When it's not settings
If the door stops at the same physical point every time regardless of settings, that's mechanical — a track obstruction, a bent section, a roller binding. If the opener runs but the door doesn't move, that's the drive gear, the trolley or the connection. If nothing runs at all, start at the power and the wall control.
